Dr Nikos Papanikolaou, Dr Nikos Papanikolaou, received his B.Sc. in Physics from the University of Athens in 1991 and his Ph.D. from the University of Athens in 1996. He worked as post-doctoral scientist in the Institut für Festkörperphysik, Forschungszentrum Jülich, in Jülich, Germany during 1997, and 1999-2000. He then moved to the University of Halle, Germany where he stayed during 2001-2002. He continued as a research fellow in the Institute of Materials Science in Demokritos (2002-2003) and joined the Institute of Microelectronics in 2003. Since 2013 he is director of research in the Microelectronics Department. His field of research is theoretical nanotechnology, with broad background in modeling material properties both using ab-initio electronic structure methods for solids, semiconductors and metals, including electronic transport and magnetic properties, but also statistical methods like molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo. Currently his work is focused on nanophotonics, plasmonics and metamaterials, as well as elastic wave propagation and acousto-optic interaction in the nanoscale.
